The traditional Japanese teapot is called “Kyusu” (急須), it is from China but sophisticated in Japan for ages. Kyusu teapot is mostly made of clay and comes from Tokoname area.

There are three types of Kyusu:

  • Side Handle Yokode Kyusu

  • Back Handle Ushirode Kyusu

  • Handle Uwade kyusu

One of the characteristics of the Kyusu is the built-in filter in stainless steel. The size of the filter is perfectly adjusted for the preparation of green tea.

For pouring the tea, traditionaly we pour tea on each cup one after another. Pouring approximately a third on each cup, then a third again until the cups are poured. This method enable to have the same taste on each cup.

Warning: It is important to pour the totality of the tea because the remaining tea in the pot will continue to infuse which is not healthy.

The clay used for the fabrication of kyusu has a positive influence on the taste of the tea. The Japanese tea-lover assure that the quality and the type of clay used for making the pot influence the tea. As the clay is highly mineralized there is a reaction with hot water during the infusion.
