Iwami Kagura is a local genre of Japan's famous Kabuki theater, originating in the Iwami region of Shimane prefecture (north of Hiroshima). The specificity of Iwami lies in the use of washi (papier-mâché) instead of wood to make theatrical masks, making them very light and expressive. Emblematic of the craftsmanship of the Iwami region, this traditional Japanese mask represents one of the male demonic characters.
Not only used a performance mask, it is also a prized decorative object in Japanese interiors to ward off evil spirits and protect the home.
