Chopsticks made in Japan
These beautiful chopsticks are covered with kimono fabrics protected by lacquer. They are called Hyakumanben-Nishijin in Kyoto, a famous place in Kyoto for making kimono since the Muromachi period (1333 to 1573).
Japanese urushi lacquer is made from the sap of the urushi tree, a tradition dating back to the Jomon period (6000BC).
Laquered objects (Shikki) are sensitive to a direct exposure to sunlight. These products cannot be used in microwaves and cannot be washed in dishwasher. Urushi products should be quickly dried after washing.
