This beautiful Samurai helmet is a nearly life-size reproduction of the real helmets used by the Captains. It consists in a "Genji-kabuto" dated from Kamakura Era (1185-1333) and composed of a Kashiradate with a dragon shape and 2 Kuwagata on the helmet to impress his opponents.
The reproduction will make an impression on you with its meticulous details and seams which are joining the metal plates. The gap at the top of the helmet was used by the Samurai to easily put their ponytails, and thus the helmet was more stable!
The main part of the helmet is called "bashi", the straw which keep it on the head of its owner is named "agemaki". Moreover the part behind the helmet which protect the neck and the shoulders is called "shikoro".
The central ornament where the dragon and the Kuwagata are, is named "maedate", the wing-like protections on each side are meant to protect the face and they have the emblems of the family of the Samurai, they are called "fukigaeshi". Finally, the visor on top of the face which strengthen the protection is named "mabisashi".
You will also notice the leather patterns on the wing-like protections showing a mountain view and a flying Dragon.
Dragons are very important and present in the Japanese tradition since the ancestors of the Imperial family are said to be the legendary creatures.
In Japan this is a tradition to present the Samurai helmets for the children's day or Kodomo no hi every May the 5th. We say that the "Gogatsu-Ningyou" (May's figurines) give the strength, happiness and health for the children. The helmet can only be worn by a child for taking a picture because it weights more than 4 kg.
